SEO AI Tools
SEO platforms help with different parts of the work: researching search opportunities, improving content, or diagnosing technical site issues. Semrush, Surfer SEO, and Screaming Frog SEO Spider overlap in their use of search data and AI, but they are not interchangeable. Pick the tool that answers the problem you have evidence for.

| Tool | Primary use | Best fit and strength | Limitations and buying considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush | Research and search visibility | SEO teams comparing keywords, competitors, monitored rankings, and search presence. | Broad suite with separate traditional SEO and AI visibility workflows; projects, reporting, data access, and usage depend on the chosen plan. |
| Surfer SEO | Content optimization | Content marketers improving existing articles or planning pages with SERP-informed topic guidance. | Recommendations reflect analyzed search results, not a ranking guarantee; content and audit allowances vary by subscription. |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Technical SEO crawling | SEOs and developers diagnosing crawlable pages, links, status codes, metadata, indexability, and sitemaps. | Desktop crawler that needs configuration and interpretation; the free crawl is limited to 500 URLs, while the licence unlocks more crawling and advanced features. AI calls may incur separate provider costs. |
Feature names, usage pools, and plan access can change. Check each vendor’s current pricing and documentation before budgeting or building a workflow.
Choose by the work to be done
- Research demand and competitors: start with Semrush when you need keyword discovery, competitive context, rank tracking, and site auditing in a broader SEO suite. Its AI search visibility tools address a different question from traditional keyword rankings: whether a brand appears in supported AI search products and monitored prompts. Compare the AI visibility product, included reports, and plan limits separately from SEO research access.
- Improve a content operation: consider Surfer SEO when writers and editors need SERP-informed briefs, on-page recommendations, content audits, or AI-assisted drafting in their editing workflow. Recommendations are directional: review accuracy, usefulness, audience fit, and originality rather than writing to a score or treating suggestions as a ranking promise.
- Find technical crawl issues: use Screaming Frog SEO Spider when you need to crawl a site and investigate broken links, response codes, metadata, indexability, and XML sitemaps. Large or JavaScript-heavy sites may require crawl configuration, rendering choices, adequate machine resources, and technical interpretation. Its optional AI integrations analyze crawl data; they do not turn it into a general-purpose AI writing suite.
- Account for scale and cost: estimate the number of pages, sites, monitored keywords, content items, users, and reports your team needs. Semrush and Surfer usage limits vary by plan. Screaming Frog's free version crawls up to 500 URLs; the paid licence removes the URL cap subject to system resources and unlocks advanced capabilities.
- Plan for AI access and review: Screaming Frog can connect to external model APIs using credentials and custom prompts; external providers may bill separately. Local model options have different setup and cost characteristics. Across all three products, review AI-generated output and verify it against crawl findings, source data, search results, and business goals.
No SEO tool guarantees rankings or traffic. Traditional search optimization and AI-search visibility are related but distinct monitoring tasks, and neither can substitute for useful content, sound technical implementation, or measurement of your own outcomes.
