Analytics and Insights Tools
Analytics products differ in what they measure and the questions they help answer. Google Analytics 4 is oriented toward website and app measurement, while Mixpanel and Amplitude emphasize event-based product behavior. Choose a tool around the decisions you need to make, not just the number of reports or AI features it advertises.

Website analytics answers questions about traffic sources, landing pages, engagement, and conversions across websites and apps. GA4 is a natural starting point when acquisition reporting and general web/app measurement matter most. It can also analyze event paths, but requires a deliberate event design for business-specific behavior.
Product analytics uses events and their properties to examine feature adoption, user journeys, funnels, cohorts, and retention. Mixpanel and Amplitude focus on this style of analysis. They overlap substantially; compare the event model, reports your team actually needs, data controls, integrations in your stack, and plan limits rather than assuming one is categorically more capable.
AI-assisted insights can make it easier to explore instrumented data, build analyses, or summarize patterns. Treat generated interpretations as prompts for investigation: validate the underlying events, segments, definitions, and context before making a product or budget decision. AI cannot repair missing or inconsistent tracking.
Choose for your team and implementation
- Content site or ecommerce: start with traffic acquisition, landing-page performance, and purchase or lead events. GA4 may cover broad measurement needs; a product analytics platform can add depth if you need behavior across logged-in journeys or product usage.
- SaaS product or app: consider Mixpanel or Amplitude when product questions depend on sequences of actions, adoption by cohort, or retention. GA4 may complement them for acquisition and broader site reporting; running two systems requires consistent definitions and data governance.
- Plan for instrumentation: all three require decisions about event names, identifiers, properties, consent, and what counts as a conversion. GA4 collects some events automatically in supported setups, but important business actions often need implementation and configuration; product analytics is only as useful as its event taxonomy and identity setup.
- Check traffic and volume: estimate monthly events/users and historical data needs against current free-plan allowances and paid tiers. Limits and included features can change, so use official pricing pages and confirm your workspace's entitlement before implementation.
- Review privacy and data quality: decide what personal data may be collected, how consent is handled in each region, retention needs, access controls, and whether your analytics setup reflects those requirements. No analytics product by itself establishes compliance.
Analytics tools do not guarantee growth. Reliable decisions depend on correct measurement, adequate context, and follow-up—not simply installing a tag or dashboard.
